Thomas Merton had something there...
Fifteen years ao I put my stuff in the car, pointed its nose west and drove 2,000 miles until I could see the Pacific Ocean. I got lost several times, made off-road discoveries, almost all good.  Today I have an unnatural fear of two-way streets, hate driving and mistrust other drivers -- they're all talking on cell phones or arguing with kids in the back seat or drunk, following me too close, popping out of side roads in front of me.  I never go anywhere at night. But I've been thinking of making some changes.
