mysteria, I taught 8th grade pre-algebra two years ago, because the

school was short of math teachers.  Only one year, and I did it my way.  I had fifteen kids who flunked 7th grade math and fifteen kids who did not speak English.  It was very challenging.  However, I limited the scope of the academic objectives, and made certain that our class knew how to do the first five chapters of the book.  My administrator said we "tested very well!".

Oder, compassion equals empowerment.  Although there is a specific recipe to get students to feel empowered.
