Are they famous jokers?

Dear Mademoiselle
i, m really dificolt to imagine ... may be its great joyfull ..

Did he really, TallAndSkinny?

That's hard to imagine.

I never really watched the show.  Though I knew he grew to, like, 7 ft tall by the time the show was in it's final season.

I Was Called Urkel
...the other day and it hurt so much!  I was wearing my pants too high.  I quickly recovered, though, pointing out that he eventually  went out of costume on the show and immediately turned into a sexy bad-boy.

Always pointing towards potential.

Nice list!   W    W.    --Shawn, "Tall & Skinny Poet"

Who says that, Mysteria?

Pee wee?  I know everyone screams real loud when the "magic word" is absent-minded uttered.  Great show; great, great show.

And yes, Passion, pedophilia does kinda kill the mood.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 9:14 PM | link to this | reply

I have a friend who used to have purple hair, Passion ...

(well, purplish, anyway) and she wasn't all that funny.

Dogs wearing sweaters are just sad.  Nagin even sadder.

If this were a list of great comedians, YPunday ...

then yes, Jim Carrey would definitely belong.  (While, say, Chewbacca probably would not qualify.)

But since it is not such a list ... no, Carrey does not.  And Yoda, for instance, does.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 9:10 PM | link to this | reply

Yes, Rumored, even among comedic giants ... Bea Arthur stands alone.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 9:06 PM | link to this | reply

And to think, Ann ...

this was only intended to be a filler.

Au contraire, Franciscan.

My mother is a lovely, delightful woman, and a complete joy to be around.

Ariel, huh?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 9:00 PM | link to this | reply

I think men in drag is often funnier to the people doing it, Blanche ...

then to those watching it.  IMO, anyway.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 8:58 PM | link to this | reply

How can you not know half of them, Dave?

At least eight are cultural icons on both sides of the Atlantic.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 8:57 PM | link to this | reply

Michael Jackson isn't funny, he's sick!

posted by Passionflower on July 17, 2006 at 8:11 PM | link to this | reply

Good list but I could add a few things:::::
  • teens with purple hair
  • Roy Nagin
  • dogs wearing knitted vests

posted by Passionflower on July 17, 2006 at 8:08 PM | link to this | reply

Jim Carey ought to rank among the top ten, don't u think?
Can you imagine him satying anything half-serious. So his name may also help novice comedians if they use Carey where they wanted to say FUNDAY, PUNDAY or DAVE SWIFTFOX

Bea Arthur..amen to that one..lol...all the others are good, too.....

Looks like the list could grow much longer. Congrats, you have the prize delivered. Thanks for playing.

Mademoiselle,
Almost sounds like this  post was inspired by your mother, an antithetical inspiration for your list.

Mam'selle

Have you never seen The Blair Thing? Or worse, his missiz? Ugh!!!!

Mademoiselle, you're forgetting men in dresses, such as Tootsie,
Tom Hanks in Bosom Buddies, etc.  Put a guy in a dress and it's guaranteed yucks.

We need footnotes for the Brits. Don't know half of these.

FYI:

My mother sent me an email asking, "What about Pee-wee Herman or Michael Jackson?"

I replied, "Possibly."

Wow, TAPS!

Thank you so much for the link!

I can't risk watching it though.

Aaron:

1) I'm not sure Nixon's name gets an automatic laugh.  Though I had considered Dr. Henry Kissinger.  However, I think he may only be funny if (an impression of) his voice is involved.  (A la Arnold Schwarzenegger.)

2) I'm not sure N'Sync is culturally significant enough.  Some people may not even remember Justin Timberlake used to be in a band.

3) Star Jones was a lot funnier when she was fat.  Barbara Walters may fall into the Kissinger/Schwarzenegger category.

P.S. One time, my mother actually told a guy he looked "just like Richard Nixon".

I was, like, "You do know that's an insult, right?"

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 9:31 AM | link to this | reply

Mademoiselle, anyone who would like to see Bea Arthur doing it can do so here.   Do "the Urkel"!

posted by TAPS. on July 17, 2006 at 9:04 AM | link to this | reply

I'd also suggest:

-Richard Nixon

-The fat guy from N'Sync  (Joey Fatone, if you can believe it)

-Anyone from "The View," particularly Barbra Walters or Star Jones

Further explanation of the meaning of this list. Note the following:

On "Conan O'Brien" recently, they showed a clip from the 1987 Emmy awards in which Jaleel White taught Bea Arthur how to do the Urkel dance.  I was laughing so hard ... I, literally, thought I was going to die

And I wasn't just laughing for a few minutes either.  I'm talking, like, several days.  It was really "touch and go" there for a while (as far as whether I was going to live or not).

Bea Arthur is absolutely awesome, TAPS ...

and, in all seriousness, deserves tremendous credit for being something of a feminist pioneer (through her show "Maude").

Madem, I did see in the comment that you left on my blog "Grounded for life." (in pink italics of course) but, I did not want to be so gauche as to acutally ask. But, since you have alluded to it.......Why were you grounded? Have I missed something (again)? I blame it on age. I seem to miss a lot these days. Mostly I miss my mind.....yes, of all the things I have lost, I miss that the mose. Moon_Spirit

Mademoiselle, Bea Arthur has to be #1 in my book also.   I could watch her forever and over and over on the same thing.

posted by TAPS. on July 17, 2006 at 8:33 AM | link to this | reply

No, ariel70, see this is not a list of people/creatures who are intentionally funny ...

but rather ones who automatically make any joke involving them funny, simply because they provide such a strong Pavlovian response.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 8:31 AM | link to this | reply

Don't worry, Bel ...

I'll be addressing that in my very next post.

Mam'selle

Yut tut, marm! Shame on you! How very, very insular of you! No British humorists/comedians/aphorists? No European ditto?

WHAT was in the package?????????

Editor's note:
I have now amended the list to include two other absolute no-brainers

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 7:05 AM | link to this | reply

I'll be addressing that issue shortly, Vickie ...

I was way too tired to post any sort of detailed account last night.

I liked the little old woman best, Ann ...

She was hilarious.

Never heard of them, Shamsuddin ...

However, there are two glaring omissions which were pointed out to me this morning.  I'll be adding them to the list momentarily.

Yeah, well, I saw a special on the Yeti last night, Davy.

It may have overly-influenced my selection process.

Urkel was the scariest character of all time.  That poor kid actor :)  And did you ever open your package or is it still bobbing in the pool?

posted by VickieJean on July 17, 2006 at 6:48 AM | link to this | reply

Hopefully, it isn't based on her resemblance to Mayim Bialik, Robdon.

You're watching a list with bated breath, Moon?

Btw, I've been grounded.  So embarrassing.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 6:45 AM | link to this | reply

Added bonus, Bandana, is that he's kinda scary, as well.

posted by Mademoiselle on July 17, 2006 at 6:42 AM | link to this | reply

Excellent list. I used to watch Bea Arthur as in The Golden Girls.  "Thank you for being my friend" They sing. Lol.
