Perhaps I didn't phrase that too precisely. I think that the fact that little girls just love to show off indicates a need to be noticed, admired, flattered even if only by an approving glance.

Yes, of course, you are correct, love to a seven year old girl is a vastly different things from love to an adult, and I'm sure that stunt a child's emotional and physical growth by our present attitudes.

I've just posted the second part, and I would welcome your views on that.

Two things...

I don't believe seven year old girls are aware of the state of being in love -- don't think they want men to be "in love" with them.  I do think children need more loving protectors than just Mom and Dad. Many small kids love older people especially. The very young and very old are linked by nearness to the gap in the circle of life -- one at the beginning, one at the end. Their friendships are especially sweet.

It is regrettable that we have become so suspicious of people a nice old guy can't spend time with a neighbor child, talking about what life was like when he was a kid, sharing cookies and milk, doodling on the piano. Supportive friendships are tainted and forbidden. Children are warned to beware of strangers and lose the sense of belonging, of continuity.  Thanks for your well-wrought, thoughtful post. :)pat

Ariel,
compared to our urban Canadian society, where parents are urged to 'street-proof' their children, it sounds idyllic...

I agree ; we can indeed make our voices heard and in time make a difference to the world.

It was perhaps not crystal clear from this first part of my post that what I refer to is not politics, but how we adults relate to children.

It will become clear in the second part.

Thanks for your visit

I would say this
We CAN take our governments back across the globe.... we can refuse to play the war game anymore. See my blog: The Noosphere of Peace and Terrorists for Peace.

El Tel, a very thoughtful piece. I don't have any answers, but as a younger

man ( no offence ) I too have seen a closing down of what children are given reign to do in our society.

We seem to have placed them in a media and government induced state of fear. Murdoch, Thatcher, Blair, Bush, I hold them all up there as culpable. I have seen the death of innocence in my lifetime and it is galling to be witness to it and to suffer under my own fear of fear itself.

Ariel70, I not saying Columbus was a saint, but go back and study his life
of faith, and maybe you might become a believer!

Thank you for your comment.

As you are probably aware, I am an atheist, but I agree wholeheartedly that it is the repudiation of our Judaeo-Christian heritage that it at the root of our current slide into moral and intellectual squalor.

Because this has also undermined -- perhaps fatally -- our belief in our liberal democratic and moral values, one suspects that we face extinction as democracies. We lack even the guts to stand up for what we are supposed to be, and to believe in, and are becoming people who know the price of everything, and the value of nothing.

Ariel70 -- Good post -- we are spiritually sick, because we have left out
of lives the reason Columbus discovered us in the first place -- to honor Christ and of course, Spain!
