I berlieve that soem of the other answers that were given were just
as valid as the one you 'chose' to be correct. The fact that they were all in pink, is just as valid!
As a treacher I must say that there is often more than one correct answer to a question and you judged us unfairly (and now I am going to go and wobble my bottom lip somewhere else!)

Actually what I guessed was that the words in the list
all follow the word "common", not the other way around.
In other words, all the words in the list are after the word "common" on the page.
I know that's probably not the answer, but I wanted to clear that up.
This is driving me nuts!
The only thing htese words seem to have in common is the fact that you typed them!!!!

more obvious (sorry, I can't use obviouser in a sentence, my internal censors won't allow it). Well, technically, even English words have roots from different countries: German, Latin, Old and Middle French, even Sanskrit if you want to go that far back. I think I may be overcomplicating things, I tend to do that.
Your mother lied to you? I'm shocked. I think it's in their handbook.

of course, IQ is, as you point out, multifacted and complex. Many dumbasses have hight Iq's and vice versa. Then again many people wit hhigh IQ's are in fact highly intelligent. Good post.

I can definitely vouch for the fact that IQ and vocabulary are not necessarily correlated. I took an IQ test (the first one I've actually been aware that I was taking, and so have any idea of the result) last winter. The psychologist was astounded that I have such a comprehensive vocabulary when I did so poorly on the actual IQ portion of the test.
I didn't tell him that I just wasn't in the mood.
