- Go to Smoking vs. Obesity
The double whammy as I refer to it
Tobacco is the #1 cause of premature death. Diet/exercise is #2. Doing them both will make you more susceptible it #3 which is medical mistakes. #4 is alcohol. I see #1, #2, and #4 all the time here.

What really kills me...
is people who are morbidly obese and smoking!!! Not to pick on anyone, but please, stop! I hate to see when people have backed themselves into lifestyles that are rapidly killing them. That includes those linemen that are showing up on out TV's larger than the wide-screen with previously unheard-of girth that passes for useful size. Steroids and pressure to be bigger are producing football palyers nearing 400 pounds. Sumo-style bodies in a moving man's game. Do yo know the average life-span of an NFL Lineman? Not much past 50 I'd bet. Bigger is not better when it brings the end so much quicker.

Good post
I must stop smoking, not because of pressure, but my own health!

editormum, the BMI is not a great guage but it seems to be the most common
These posts aren't directed at any individuals. I'm severely obese according to the BMI. These posts are for the discussion of a bad trend in the U.S. As far as doors widening and airplanes using two seats per person, these things are already going on. I made up the rest but I'll bet some of them come true.
I'm part of the informal Blogit support group for those of us that are trying to change our part in the trend.

Careful, Hon!
I'm five feet tall, my BMI is close to 40, and I weigh 215 pounds. That's about 100 pounds more than I ought to weigh, putting me in the "morbidly obese" category. Am I working on that little problem? Of course! On August 1, my BMI was over 40, and I weighed 225!
But! I can fit through the substandard 30" doorways of my home with no trouble --- without even turning sideways! Once I locked myself out of the house and had to climb through a window in the back -- the opening was 27 inches. I fit comfortably in theatre seats. Airplane seats were too small even when I weighed 100 pounds soaking wet, so I don't count those --- I think the airlines are just insane. And I walk a LOT. Park at the back of my company's parking lot, park at the far end of the church parking lot, don't park near the door at stores unless I have the kids along, and so on.
Most people who look at me don't realize just how dangerously overweight I am. My boss, who sees me every day, told me I should get a second opinion about my doctor's recommendation to lose 100 pounds. My boss is a fitness freak who jogs every day and never eats sweets. I think he's great, but it's clear that he doesn't see me. And neither do lots of other folks, apparently. Even my doctors. I've had several doctors react with astonishment, and even insist on re-weighing me themselves, when they saw my weight on my chart.
All that to say that not all obese people are "fatty, fatty, two-by-four" -- some of us look quite normal and have no problems adjusting to a thin-oriented world. Except clothes. It's hell and a half to try to find fashionable, attractive clothes in size 20 women's petite that don't cost half a year's pay.

Thanks naorem. It's something that is going to have a big impact on us
I worry what will happen when the ruling body is part of the problem.
