this was a good post. Glad I didn't miss it.
It seems that 9 out of 10 days, I can bite my tongue.  It's that 10th day that's still a problem.

Oh I didn't (obviously) know that about the hosta! Now it makes sense, lol.

I agree with you.Julia because in the other world, I would

1. try diplomacy and after a bit, tell it like it is

2. i would invest in the real face-to-face relationship. Here it may be more energy than you or I have with "people" who introduced themselves correctly or otherwise on Blogit.

thanks for comments on haiku--the Hosta is also called a praying plant--that variety or subspecies. After U left TAPS- had a great praying mantis eat a hummingbird, w/ pciture to prove it. LOL

Julia, I've had to ask myself that so many times, "what am I doing here and
why?"  Every time I think about leaving, I miss the people I care about, and I miss the outlet and expression and just opening up a New Entry window and spilling out my thoughts too much.  I don't always like the person I become when I get into arguments, either, and I can't always admit that.

it's just that I don't really like who I "become" when I get caught up in rank chasing. Yes it's igsignificant in terms of my real life but I much prefer nice, quiet blogging with a few good friends and readers, LOL.

Sorry, Julia, I wasn't clear, I meant your previous comment to Avant about
being chewed up and spit out by rankings madness.  I get it, too, but it is reallly small potatoes.

I won't lie, it does look nice up there but I'm going to have to leave again before the ranking madness takes hold of me, chews me up and spits me out, lol.

I agree that there are times when speaking up is necessary. In this case, I felt it was the wisest choice to walk away.

posted by Julia. on September 6, 2006 at 11:03 AM | link to this | reply

Julia., I really like Terpgirl's comment, that so much bad happens because

no one will speak up.  I agree that, for the most part, over daily trivialities and differences of viewpoints,  it's pointless to get into a tiff, especially on the Internet, where as the joke goes, "Arguing on the Internet is like winning the Special Olympics, the winner may have won, but they're still "special"."

Lack of empathy for others, specifically when it's aimed at someone who is struggling with an emotional burden, needing to tell someone, and just finding their voice, is one thing that I find cruel and intolerable.  I do think that pointing out that when someone has made a cruel, unempathetic or just plain ignorant comment to or about someone's suffering, is almost a moral obligation.

posted by Blanche. on September 6, 2006 at 10:55 AM | link to this | reply

no point arguing over a point of view
because it changes, and sometimes what we write here is just in the moment...
i don't even always write from my point of view, especially in poetry. I just impersonate another person..

Julia.

Simply by observing the antics here, I quickly learned that telling a fool what a fool he is only results in a fool that's mad at you. As you say, who needs that?

J,
Totally agree. And, walking away is so much less stressfull (if not just plain stress free) than feeding into the world of negativaty of others. For sure.

Good post, Julia. If it's in your power to say it, it's also in your power
not to say it. The power of silence, of nothing said, can equal or beat the power of a great deal said.

posted by _dave_says_ack_ on September 6, 2006 at 2:02 AM | link to this | reply

I agree
it is much better simply to walk away. Some people have different opinions and one should respect that, one does not have to try and change others if one can simply walk away. Wise post.

You know, I make the point about the anonymity all the time. I just wasn't thinking of it here.  You're absolutely right.  In this forum people will say things they wouldn't dream of saying to someone standing face to face.

I'm just thinking you got into that normal debate.  Yeah, I back out of the abnormal ones myself.  Then, as a rule, I stay away from those blogs that draw those sorts of people.

if you enjoy a healthy debate with your girlfriend that is cool, but too often in the virtual world people seem unable to keep it polite. My guess is that the anonymity of it makes them more bold...

Your response to the person they they were harsh

may have, indeed, fallen on deaf ears.  But what of someone else who had just wandered into the conversation.  So much bad that happens in the world happens because everyone assumes they are the only one who has a dissenting opinion.  How often have you heard that..."I was going to say something, but everyone else seemed to be going along with it."  It's sort of how mob mentality starts.

I'm not talking drag out fights or those kind of debates you know will be lost on the entire group because the person writing has a particular audience and they have a real extreme point of view.

My best friend of 30 years  and I have often made it a point to take opposite sides of a debate/conversation...just to really get all views.  More often than not we agree, so it's funny when people think we're disagreeing.  I'm a journalist, I often just want to make sure I've asked enough questions to make a choice I personally can live with.

This certainly goes way beyond what you're saying here.  I've bit my tongue at Blogit many times, so I get what you're saying.   I have heard so many talking about keeping the Blogit peace recently that it is making me reconsider my view of this as a virtual world to debate issues, take a look at different sides, etc.  For heaven sake's most of the "don't make waves" speeches I've seen in the last week were in the OPINION section.  That's almost funny.
