oh, that explains everything...sorry I missed the point
don't get me started, but this is so sad, and it tears me to pieces, because my very own child well (19 year old son) took his life, different but I know the pain. sigh.

Behind the poem...
It's nice to let people read my poetry and develop their own interpretations of what it means to them, but I will go ahead and reveal the author's vision... It is a parent singing his or her dying child to sleep for the last time. I picture a young cancer patient cradled in her mother's arms, unwitting of her impending fate, but comforted by the soothing words of the one in whom she places all of her trust. This idea reveals just how haunting, and yet comforting, can be the children's bedtime prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the LORD my soul to keep, If I should die before I wake, I pray the LORD my soul to take."

To me this seems to be about soothing a frightened child to sleep but I could be off-track of course.

depression may not feel like dying inside but it is not the same as the
fear of death, more like a death wish, it is different. Your words speak true, but I still don't quite get it, and I do want to understand what I read. I know it is about hope, it is the death part that I don't get.

don't know if I fully understand it.
is it dying to self, fear of death, literally or figuratively speaking or both? Where does all this come from, sorry I am just curious.
