I must log off regrettably, due to time constraints and responsibilities. I hope that you read my replies, in that they are heartfelt.

It's good to read you again.

Well, you seem to practice what you preach.
I love reading the comments on mine and others posts, but I do not always respond to what is said to me.  So I guess I am guilty of your complaint.... I shall try to do better.

hot dogs and potatoe salad... please!  I have to admit to posting and running sometimes- just not enough time

i was just yesterday rueing the fact that my schedule is so busy,

i don't have the time to converse the way i would like.  sometimes i find bloggers have left brilliant messages, or something really funny, but by the time i get around to commenting on their comments, they're long gone, as is the moment.  it's very frustrating.

i'm assuming the time of year has a lot to do with it, why we bloggers as a group are posting and running, and i suspect, dear julia, that the garden parties will come and go as the seasons and work/school schedules change.

perhaps if you sent out party invitations, everyone could plan to show up at the same time!

It depends on if I am really tired or in a hurry.  I do both but I try not to post and run tooooooooooo often.

I confess, I'm a post and run blogger most days. At least I serve brownees.

Julia., so there's no real concensus apparently on commenting style.

It looks like most, myself included, sometimes have more time than others to respond.

I do wonder about the people who never return comments, especially in the political section, like Opinionmaster, who never respond at all, just leave a kind of electronic graffiti, before moving on to the next post.

Well, if you're Quirky, then I must be Zany!  (or Zane E), lol,

I have been wondering about this since joning Blogit
I have noticed some interaction on Comments pages, so I do look at new comments for a response. I read all the comments posted on my own blog but seldom reply there. Instead I visit my commentators' blogs, where I may add another comment.

posted by AbsolutelyPositive on October 15, 2006 at 2:36 AM | link to this | reply

I usually post then read for a while and comment.

But I usually don't comment on my comments. Unless someone asks a question. Ummm ...I'llhave a little of tha potato salad.

I like to comment on the comments

I try to say something on everyone who write a comment. It's not to draw people there or to get the piece a big following.  As a writer, it's like bouncing ideas off of people.  People who comment often give me an entirely different outlook on something, so me aspects I've missed. They are great side insights, even if the commenting person just thinks what they say are little things.

Often one comment spins into another post. That's a good feeling, too.

sometimes post and run, sometimes post and read
In response to your blog, I can tell you that I read as much and as often as possible of as many kinds of written work as possible.  But with three kids, chronic illness of various sorts and surgeries and tests, teaching two college classes, being in a writer's program, working on personal artistic projects, doing kids homework, housekeeping, being a freelance consultant, and dealing with issues of their father, well, you get it.  Often there is no time to do anything but post and run.  I do value the comments of others on my writing, particularly on the most recent post called Life in Words and Pictures (tie me up and burn me down!)  I value my readership a lot, both ways.  I care about what I read and what I write.  I would never expect others to laud and praise and comment on mine without my returning the favor once in a while as my time and my body allow.  So, you have a point, but I can see the other side too.  Sometimes things are more complex than they appear to be, yet we attribute them to the wrong thing or the wrong person or whatever.  Good to read you and have a good night.  Lisa

Mneme, the thing I like about blogging is that you don't have to have
the conversation over five minutes.  I like that you can take a moment from your day and all else that is going just to pick up on a conversation of a week ago. You can dip in or hang about  - the flexibility is good.  Too much of life today is now, now, now.

I don't think it's odd to read/comment and not post - whatever we can do in the time available should be fine, surely. Sometimes I can't write at all, so I read and dip in here and there, quite often commenting but not always. I rarely just post without having a look around to see else is awake, I can't resist. Not very disciplined at all, really.

I realize that my earlier comment will cast me as villain
and yet I know that would be wrong. You see I was in the frame of mind to give comments today and earlier I responded to my comments and gave an  hour or so so to general comments  and have just noticed that I had only one visitor (no further comment) to my post.

What a great post, Julia!!

If ya serve me some tater salad, maybe I'll stay for a while!  I think I'm guilty of the post and runner syndrome..but only sometimes.  I tend to run here and there all day..and like popping back to blogit when I need a break.  Also, I find it hard to type for too long so I alternate between laptop and PC for the old arthritis issues.  This is a great post..I love it!

I usually like to stick around, see who comments. I agree, it's a lot like a one-sided conversation if you post and go. I feel as though those kinds of bloggers expect people to read their work and just be bowled over by it. I know that sometimes people ask me questions in my comments section; and if I don't hang around, how can I answer them?

Sometimes, however, I just don't have the time to stick around...

Which leads me to another question: when someone comments in someone's comment section, do they stick around to continue the conversation? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't...

Throw in some barbeque chips and you're on....:)
I'm guilty of this sometimes; does seem like time is driving many of us too quickly and recklessly of late - blogging becomes a wistful blur. Thank you for the comment and inquiry on my post Julia  I'm having a nice albeit busy Saturday night - family demands often increase when I'm in the mood to write and talk to Blogit friends...hmmm...gonna try scaring them away - LOL...

Well I'll post this and run
If I felt obliged to  comment when I post I would almost never post. As it is I only manage about 3 or 4 a week now and that feels like too much time given what else there is to be done. There were a couple of days this week where I only commented and didn't bother posting at all which probably seems even more baffling.

re: "abandoning his post." It does have a nice ring to it, eh? It reminds me of Lt. Dunbar in Dances With Wolves when we went out to the fort and everyone was gone but he refused to "abandon his post."

It depends, Julia., I've had a lot going on the last couple of days,

so depending on my schedule, I'll stick around and chat.  I have noticed a few like you've described though, and it does feel a little like commenting into a void, like "Hello, in there, anybody home?"

I can't always stay, but I really love to, too, there's nothing like the camaraderies of a good Blogit party...especially when .Dave's around to liven things up!
