Poet,
I have a rule, well, several, if you wish. I smile, and sometimes make a little joke, if something occurs to me on the spur of the moment. If they smile back, great! If they don't smile, that's fine too, maybe they're having a bad day.
But if they're rude - I get VERY rude!

Our lives do seem to be more complicated and busy these days, and yes the work, stresses and confusion can pile up, but kindness makes everything easier to take. I remember the gas stations before self-serve stations, much more layed-back than now. The attendants were even friendly!
