Thanks for dropping by, everyone.
Mneme- yes, politics is not everyone's cup of tea but it remains vital not just for us but for our children. It's often as not driven by economic factors - primarily mankind's innate greed. Tough words, but true! We want to help others, but we also want to be better off, even though we actually are already well off in practical terms - well, most of us.

I rarely get political

but I'm responding to Taps - I remember this one, from the poet laureate, Andrew Motion, shortly before both our governments went into Iraq. I don't want to get into debate, but I thought the poem itself questioned the idea of "top down" democracy along with the motivation.

CAUSA BELLI

They read good books, and quote, but never learn
a language other than the scream of rocket-burn.
Our straighter talk is drowned but ironclad
elections, money, empire, oil and Dad.

Tony
May be my emails are not reaching their destinations, let me know if you received the long one about Simon. I hope I don't have a problem with my server. It is not that reliable at times.

MC-
I doubt it very much that it will be offensive. I'll have a look now. Last time I turned the computer back on, there were no new messages.

Tony,
It is political correctness gone mad. Unwritten rules are becoming more overt and intolerance is flourishing under the guise of protecting freedom, it is ironic is not it. Fear and vindication is often at the root of such intolerance. you made a good point, well done.

Hi TAPS
Well i'm glad you share that view. A lot of poems and novels were political, and to work, they have to cut to the chase. No good pussyfooting around! I was going to write about something entirely different but i was reading some other blogs (not on Blogit) during the day - at work! - and someone correctly made the point that it's not just democracy we need, but liberal democracy - a particular brand of democracy that the USA (and also, lately, the UK) haven't been operating correctly for a while, even though they've been lecturing the rest of the world about it non-stop. Liberal democracy has been undermined by the rich and by the religious interference in affairs of state. No doubt there will be more to come...

Tonyzonit, If there was ever a good time for the political poem, I think it might be now.

Thanks to both of you!
I knew it would be wise to add a footnote! Hopefully though, the poem actually says what the footnote says it does, but of course poems are not as cut and dried as prose. That maybe is their strength, except when I'm trying to make a political point!!

I don't like to get into religion or politics, but I enjoyed the poem. : )

I think this was a strong statement for freedom
meaning your footnote was required for me.
