One of the nice things about living overseas is that when you make big purchases, like a car, the interest is 0%. But when we get back to the states I will eventually have to buy another car. The plan is to take part of the tax return this year and put it aside...and add to it monthly til I have a price for what I want. (After-all, if I can't afford to put aside the money..then how can I afford the car payment????)

Ben, that's great. We'll have our car paid off next year
And then we are going to start saving for the next one so we can pay cash.

I emailed Talion a few days ago and haven't received a response
I hope things are okay with him and his family.

i don't want to intrude and
if his wife reads his e-mails she may get the wrong impression of my inquiry.

Good question. LadyChardonnay
I've got the blog containing the story of his mother bookmarked as one of My Favorites, and you're right - Talion really hasn't posted in ages. You can always email him directly to find out what happened - there's an email link on everyone's member profile.

on a side note - whatever happened to Talion?  He hasn't posted for awhile - I wonder if something happened to his mother?  Just wondering.

We were fortunate in the sense that an inheritance allowed us to buy a car outright. Granted, it wasn't a BMW or other luxury car, but it meets our needs. People are just unwilling to scale down their expectations - they want that luxury item, and they want it now, and they are unwilling to see the consequences of putting it on old Mr. Visa/Discover/MasterCard. Yet, when you ask them about purchasing the same luxury item using cash on the barrelhead, they complain they can't afford it because they don't have that kind of cash on hand. Go figure.
