- Go to Impeached Judge to Head House Intelligence Committee?
Thanks, Professor, for the added information!
Much appreciated. Nonetheless, he has that impeachment in his past, and the impression given by campaigning Democrats was that they would run a clean house. Look at it this way. People wanting to compromise his position as chair of the House intelligence committee will see that he has that blemish, and they will attempt to exploit it as a weakness through which to gain access to classified information. It'd be best if that opportunity were not afforded them.
As for documentation of Pelosi's interest in Hastings for this position, it goes back over a year. See http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/7/31/135622.shtml, http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/9/5/174004.shtml?s=ic, http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/10/31/102047.shtml and http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/11/17/100658.shtml?s=lh for documentation.

Alcee Hastings
Some minor points:
Hastings was never convicted of any crime. He was acquitted of the charges (See Wikipedia.org)
He was impeached by a Senate committee, not the full Senate. A Federal Court judge overturned the decision to impeach. When the US Supreme Court ruled on the matter, it did not address his guilt or innocence, only stating that Federal Courts have no jurisdiction over Senate rulings.
The people of his district have elected him to Congress since 1993; so, apparently, they think he's doing a good enough job. Are you going to tell them who they can elect? BTW, LOTS of black politicians have been voted out of office, sometimes by using scurrilous racist "Call me, Harold" ads. There is no immunity for black politicians. Just ask your also-ran Steele.
Perhaps most importantly, when the scandal hit, a democratic run Senate voted a
democrat out of office. When Tom Delay was indicted (yeah, yeah I know, a "politically motivated partisan investigation" Nevertheless, a 2/3 majority of a grand jury did indict him) the Republicans just changed the rules, from removing from leadership anyone indicted of a crime to only those actually convicted of one.
But finally, why are you assuming that Pelosi will appoint or recommend him? That's an assumption (and we know what that stands for). You're picking up on an argument that hasn't happened yet. Is it because you feel that's one you can win? There are plenty of convicted Republicans working for the current administration (negraponte, Poindexter, Rich, etc.) Where's your outrage about them? Ney served for months after he pled guilty. Your chief spokesperson, Rush Limpbaugh, is an admitted drug addict. Your president is a drunk driver and cocaine addict. Your VP has a few bourbons, shoots his friend in the face during a canned hunt, and delays the police investigation until he can "freshen (read "Sober") up." Your party has enough skeletons in the closet to worry about without worrying about what the Dems MIGHT do!
