You've nailed it with the recognition that Iraq is a different culture
from ours, and it is not entirely sane to expect the Iraqi populace to react as we would like them to,  to the changes the US and other Western nations are trying to establish there.

Democracy is a fine ideal, but is the Iraqi population ready for what we consider democracy?  The question is, what will work for them that brings them closer to it?  What if some other form of government is better for their stabillity as a nation?

What do they really need right now, to head off the sectarian retribution scenario, to bring security to life and limb, and foster some expectation of recognition, legal and social, of real personal rights?

Frankly, I would rather not see the whole world homogenized in the image of the American mind-set.

I don't know how you can say you feel safer over here with the fighting

in Iraq. On 9/11 NONE  of the hijackers came from Iraq. Irag NEVER attacked us.

Fifteen of the attackers were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt, and one from Lebanon.

The REAL war on terror was being fought in Afghanistan until Bush got sidetracked with bad information and now we are bogged down in a CIVIL war in Iraq as our troops get killed babysitting these lowlifes. The war is still going on in Afghanistan and this year was even worse as terrorism flourishes around the world.
