I'm sorry I can't help you with the literary term, mneme, I'm only a pretend writer. Burning CDs is easy, BUT who knows when they will be as obsolete as floppies. There is another problem associated with CDs - where to store them. They are physical thingies. When I was looking for the CDs I spent umpteen thousand pounds on, it took me a week to find them. I'd placed them somewhere safe where I would remember ...HUH!

the first problem is remembering what ever-so-logical-at-the-time folder name or sub-folder I gave them.
The other naive things I do are a) to imagine I will ever again find them on the floppy disks from years back, and b) that the not-recommended-for-long-term-storage flash drives will do for now.
I must learn how to burn CDs
I must learn how to burn CDs
I must learn how to burn CDs......
(Now, tell me the literary term for the strings-of-words-run-together-as-adjective is, because I can't remember...)

RFLMAO at your dry sense of humour Pat, not to mention your fabulous knowledge of square thingies that plug into something-or-others. I'll troll thru the net looking for the thingies you have suggested, but first I'll back up my hard drive. Thank you muchly.

I played with a thing called "Corel Painter 8" for a while.
I seem to remember doing photo editing with it. That was two computers ago. Also there's a tool called the Wacom tablet. Plugs into the new square slot things, works with a wireless pen or mouse. I think Painter 8 was its companion product.
Not long after Wacom and Painter, the fan on the hard drive failed, turned the disk into a warped crispy chip. I lost the "final" version of my novel, which was NOT backed up. (duh) My energy after that went into re-writing the novel from the original typed pages (luckily I'm packrat enough to have kept them), getting set up on the new computer, etc. Maybe this could be useful to you.

That is what is worrying us, word. The request from the gallery has had some impression on her. She is talking of cutting out a shift or two and getting back to what she is brilliant at. We, of course, will help. Her paintings and drawings are breathtaking

You can actually do that, mneme? Organize your word.docs? I am so impressed. I tend to keep opening folders instead of files and making a multiplicity of copies - all on the same computer, please note. As if that is going to save them!

John,
This all sounds painfully frustrating - but as cliched as it sounds, nothing worth anything comes easy. But it's good news that your daughter has some good things on the horizon. Just hope she doesn't run herself to a wreck.

I sympathise, I have enough trouble just organising my word docs into folders that make any logical sense. Good luck with it.

I'm sure you do, Azur. To a professional, frustration must be even more...er...frustrating?

Thank you for that information, Carl Peter. I do love the idea of a free programme. I'll go and check it out right now.

Thank you for the compliment, faholo. It's nice to know that I even have style. I will persevere with the manual and life in general.

Not knowing what you have in mind
but taking a blind stab that it might have something to do with rendering, the whole CAD line drawings and photograph aspect of it. In that case, you might want to take a look at POVRay which, last time I checked, comes for the very reasonable price of FREE. You can save the renderings in a number of formats, including Compressed and Uncompressed Targa, PNG, PPM and Bitmap on the PCs and Pict on the Macs.
Besides it is a fun program which, like TeX, follows the philosophy of WYWIWYG, what you want is what you get. This is opposed to the Henry Ford philosophy of WYSIWYG:
Do you see any color of car besides black? Then black is what you get.
