Hi ST. It doesn't directly influence my sonnets very often, but
...occasionally I do quote the odd title or line from a song, or some other phrase picked up from somewhere else. Like you, I like to write quite musically, with a strong sense of beat. I think people enjoy reading that, too, more than poetry that is too fragmented and complex. Poetry is supposed to be about sound as well as meaning, so having a recognisable beat and structure fulfils that part of the requirement. If I was a performance poet I'm sure the audience would appreciate something akin to a song or a rap, as respite from the dry dusty poems with no obvious rhymes or structure (especially when spoken aloud, when you can't see the layout of the lines and stanzas).
