And of course we mustn't forget
he was the founder of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto.
his son Francis said he died peacefully in his arms and did not suffer.
Another huge loss to culture and humanity.

That's the reaction the critics had during Menotti's lifetime to his operas. I've never heard anything he's wrote, so I can't critique it adequately, but that's what the obituaries seemed to say.

Although one naturally laments the death of any contributor to the sum of beauty and grace in living, I must admit that such little of Menotti's music that I've heard leaves me cold.
