Whacky
I seldom see a Wal-Mart Greeter that looks as if she likes what she is doing and really wants to greet some one. Once in a while, though, there is a pleasant looking older man greeter that is much more friendly.

I have observed the greeter at the Wal-mart here. I find myself going in there for everything these days. The greeter is a sweet little grandmother with gray hair and dressed to the nines. She has every hair in place, she is petite and dresses like going to a club meeting. She is shy enough that you want to extend a greeting to her and then she smiles back and says something nice to you. She does make me want to shop. She reminds me of my mother.

Whacky...
Our greeters here are over exuberant. You know, sometimes you just want to go into the store and not be greeted, but they are always there offering you a cart. That's part of the tactic, I only wanted a Hershey bar but it looks silly with only one item in your cart. Worse than Wal-Mart for me is Costco, not only do you get things you don't really need, you get at least two of them in 50-gallon drums! Little known Costco fact, online Costco sells (check it out yourself, I am not making it up) caskets!

I miss Wal-Mart.....I could never go in that place without spending at least 100.00 everytime, so yes, there were many times that I bought things that I absolutely did not need. Why do I miss it???? I'm not sure......maybe I miss the thrill of being in "the trance"

All those big stores put shoppers into a "trance" - that's what they're banking on. I once zipped into a big store for a couple of steaks and left with lawn chair and a BBQ (which, of course, were positioned just adjacent to the steaks). They're no dummies. I now avoid those stores and visit only the Mom and Pop owned shops. It's a far more pleasant experience and you leave with what you went in for.

I love popcorn
but can never remember if I prefer salty or sweet, so have to have both whenever we go to the cinema for example.

WalMart
Even though WalMart tends to have the best prices around here I refuse to shop there. Their management strategy is to treat their staff like sub-human to save costs(which may explain why some of the greeters are the way they are). I know that one less person shopping there isn't going to make or break the store but it makes me feel like I'm doing something.

I used to buy stuff I didn't need at Wal-Mart, Whacky, but after your 'beam' explanation, I will be more cautious and look for the beam machine.

That's funny! It must be sensory overload. I've seen kids with it all the time. By the way, when I worked at Sam's, we built a new store across town. They deliberately ran a vent pipe from the bakery to the front door, so people would smell the goodies as they walked in. I was amazed at how many people remarked how good it smelled. They know what they are doing.

nope, my mama taught me to be a careful shopper,
and she taught me how to avoid the brain beam. What I can't figure out is how come a greeter that only "greets" one fourth of the people doesn't get fired? And talk about a dumb job--personally I couldn't care less if a store had someone there to say hello to me as i walked in.

I don't need one of those beams I do well shopping on my own. But I stay away from Wal-Mart on the weekends. Its wall to people, pushing you out of their way. Shoppers forget their manners at home, or maybe that beam removes manners also from them

Wal-Mart is great. They have everything. Almost. But I've decided pets are a bad idea. They can't tell us what they really want.
