Whacky
I sure have, Whacky. Two years ago we had the roof re-shingled by an idiot. When it snows heavily we sit here waiting for the roof to cave in.

Oh yes,
Often times the cure is worse than the cause. I am going to get a new dishwasher because the repairman cannot get my current one to my satisfaction! Glad your Dad's job finally turned out terrific. Talented aren't you?
Great!

Reno fun
I hired a renovator to gut my kitchen when I bought my house. He was recommended by the company that was installing the cabinets. He did a good job overall but I was there supervising the job at least twice a day. The supervision kept him on his toes (and I held back 50% of the price until he was done).
The countertop installer was horrific! They delivered the granite to my apartment not the new house even though the shipping documents clearly had the house address! The stove wouldn't fit and they had to come back the day I moved in to cut it (even though they had made a template with all the specs). They gouged the drywall which I had to pay the reno guy to repair.
I had held back 30% of their fee to be paid once the job was complete so I deducted the cost of repairs to the drywall.
Moral of the story, don't pay until you are completely satisfied.

I learned not to hire a man for a job just because you know the family and the man needs the job, especially if its something on the front of the house that everyone will see all the time. When you know and like the family, you almost feel like you have to pretend you like the work even if they did a crummy job.

Sometimes I miss owning my own home for that simple reason I could change some of the things in this house, like the ugly green. Its my least favorite color and its all over this house even the outside

No
But I've had friends with good intentions that destroyed stuff around my house when they were in actually trying to fix it!

whacky,
it's nice to have a sliding door. I have one and my wife puts up a flowery curtain across it.

That happens a lot here in Zambia, people are just not service orientated and just want the job over and done with doesn't matter if they take short cuts to do it, so the end result is usually a f.... up. Glad you got your door sorted... sometimes it's better to do things yourself, if you are able.
