It is unfortunate that it has to be that way anywhere. It all starts with our parents.

WOW!! I hope that I did not offend in any way. This post came from a conversation that I had with a couple of black gentlemen. They continued on about what was owed to them and so on. This post was to point out the self-segregation that is happening.
It bothers me to no end to watch fact based shows on how our black brothers and sisters were treated, and in some cases continue to be treated, with such blatant cruelty and hatred.
I can only imagine what it would be like to be black, to walk down the street and have a mother pull her child to the other side to avoid you. Although, back in my younger days when I dressed in leather and wore facial hair the same things happened, not because of my race, but because of the way that I dressed and the stereotypes of people that dressed that way.

It just gets me that after such a struggle for equal rights, there is now self-segregation

Well the man who draws might be white but when he was yound and
came here to Australia he had to contend with racist remarks and nastyness because he was Greek and had poor language skills and ate wierd food. He was a wog, a dagger carrying dago come here to take jobs away from good Australians. Go home reffee!
We must be honest within ourselves. All of us carry prejudices we perhaps aren't even aware of. Handed down to us by family, friends and experiences. I perfer to love a person.. an individual. Find the positive within someone of any given race or colour. There is good and bad in all...I fight the bad within myself.

you hit the nail on the head, my daughter went to a primarily Hispanics school and our neighborhood was also Hispanic, but we were the ones that were stared at if we dare cross the line and go into one of their stores or walk outside we were stared at. All my daughter's friends are Hispanic and she only associates with them. I don't dare make any remark about their parents that sit at home on their asses and collect welfare.

She got the way to fit in other wise they wouldnt have anything to do with this blonde, blue eyed girl

First of all, no one in their right mind has ever proclaimed you should be ashamed of your race. Yes, there are African Americans, Mexican Americans, etc., but there are also Irish Americans and Italian Americans, etc. too. In about a week or so, note the celebrations, drinking green beer, and what not. In the spring and summer months, there are all kinds of heritage festivals and celebrations focusing on old world European countries, Italian, Greek, whatever. It's just not minorities that do this.
If I had a dime for every time I walked through a parking lot and heard the mechanical click of automatic door locking, for every time I stepped on an elevator and a white person stepped off or refused to get on, for every time I pass a white woman on the street she clutches her purse a little tighter or assumes a defensive posture, for every time I'm in a store and employees watch me closely hoping to catch me shoplifting, I'd have a hell of a lot more money than I'll ever make blogging here. Let's not mention the times complete strangers have offered to buy drugs from me. So that goes both ways too. It's not okay for me to be treated like this. What makes you think it's okay to treat you differently or call you names? If a black person or other minority uses racist slurs, he/she is in just as much hot water as everyone else.
As far as the United Negro College Fund, Miss Black America pagents and such are concerned, have you forgotten why such things were started? The thing that bothers me the most about your position on this point is the hypocrisy of it all. On one hand, black people as a whole are chastised for not being "self-sufficient" and/or taking a more active part in their own self-improvement instead of relying on the government, yet when organizations are founded to do it, they are chatised for being "exclusive" if not "racist." Which do you want it to be? It can't be both ways.
And another thing. Black Entertainment Television, Black Starz, and even the Miss Black America pagent are examples of niche marketing. It's recognizing a potential market and providing a product it would buy, capitialism at its finest. White people are the majority of the American population. You are the mainstream, the audience most companies, entertainment or otherwise, are targeting. Most products are geared with you in mind. Therefore, you don't need White Entertainment Television. You already have it. (This is really a moot point because so much of what airs has no revelant cultural significance anyway.)
I went to a black college. What makes it "black" is the predominant race of the students, not who alone is allowed to attend. Not only were there white students, but white faculty and administrators. Using this same criteria, every other college and university except for the sixty you mention are "white" simply because the majority of the student body is. No where is it written or mandated that black people or other minorities cannot attend if they fulfill the entrance requirements.
The ignorance that breeds outright racism and/or racial animosity isn't a white thing. It's a people thing. Anyone is capable of it regardless of race. We can go back and forth trying to determine who's the bigger victim, but will that solve the problem? You can accept a person regardless of race and so can I. We aren't part of the problem, but we can be part of the solution.
