Discom-
Pleasures chattering all the way, left me none the wiser, but Sad; When the Sorrows waked, and ne’er a word said she; walked a mile with me; But Oh! The things I learned from her…lasting Joy

Thanks proc and FoliageGold
Actually proc, with my the family "stuff" I've been dealing with lately, it's made the decision on what to do a bit easier. I feel I have to go back to the States to spend time with my dad now. I think I've neglected him. I'll be going back to the States as soon as I can tidy things up here (probably in two months or less), and might not return to NZ. We'll see.

Thanks Tony :)
I was just thinking about the bitter people I've known (at times, that's been me, I'll admit it) and how joy is an ephemeral thing, it doesn't last forever but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. We just have to adjust our expectations to realize that the fleeting moments are no less joyfull or meaningful for their lack of permanence (in fact maybe we cling to them because they are so fleeting?). And yes the memory is still there, that's what we can hold onto.

Hi Discom - absolutely.
And anyway, joy does last. Everything that was good is still there - in the past. It doesn't vanish, it remains with us in our memories, and wise people can still appreciate that it happened at all. After all, we have no right to joy - it's a gift, and by the nature of life, it can only come along every now and then and must be balanced by the less enjoyable bits. Well done!
