Regarding creating a child to "save" a marriage: back when, it was thought that a mutual child could save, not only a marriage, but an estate, a business or kingdoms. Hostage or heir, the whole thing is hard on the poor child. Also, the people who study these sort of things say that men especially don't feel like "family" until the birth of the second child. Takes a while for them to catch on, I guess.
