It has gotten to the point, kooka, that the conservatives are believing
their own propaganda: we're fighting terrorism in Iraq, we fight over there so they won't come over here, it's not an insurgency (civil war, rebellion, whatever), we have to protect Iraq's fledgling democracy, a pullout will cause a Middle East domino effect, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.  I believe that Bush and the Bobbleheads have come to realize that pulling out now gives Iran a huge advantage in influence in the region (they're Shiite, just like most of Iraq).  I also believe that even though his democracy export isn't working as planned, as long as our troops are there, Iraq can be a bulwark against a truly dangerous Iran.  They don't want to say it outright, still hedging the diplomatic angle, but I think that's where the focus is now.  Iraq has become a convenient (if a bit of a nuisance) staging area for a showdown or war with Iran, which is an actuall threat, which Iraq never really was...

they don't want to admit that they might be wrong
even to the point of letting this military action ruin the U.S.
