I think that suffering through a poorly paid internship is worth it. I did one at min. wage one summer but it got me a much better job than trying to stick it out for a better paid one. And that editor I worked with still loves me and would help me find a job somewhere. It suuuucked trying to tough it out that summer but it was worth it in the long run. I did try and negotiate a higher pay but sometimes they say that it pays what it pays and take it or leave it....

Here's the thing: you know you're not getting paid enough cash.
The place you're going to work knows it. They'll owe you a favor -- if nothing else, a glorious glowing recommendation. Not only that it's a line for your resume, and if you keep your eyes and ears open you'll learn things you'd never get in a classroom. How the "real world" works, for one thing, how to work with a**holes, for another. And when they ask you to bring coffee, smile a big cheesy smile and ask how they like it. Nobody need know what's behind the smile... Who knows, you might be running that joint one of these days. :)
