sorry Nautikos, this is going to be a long one

I am curious as to who is this Abdul Kasem you quoted in your post. His list of possible co-authors of the Koran is interesting :

Imru' Al qais was a pre-Islamic poet, he was the first to have a Mo'olaqqah, one of the seven masterpieces of Arabic (Pre-Islamic) poetry that were supposedly hung on the Qa'aba in Mecca. His poetry revolved around four main themes: wine, women, hunting and his failed attempts to avenge the death of his father and regain the throne of his kingdom Kinda. He died 25 years before Mohammad was born.

Bahira was a monk, Muhammad met him as boy in Basra, Syria. why would a Christian man of God author a "divine" book i cannot understand.

Salman was Persian, and the Koran was written in language that was beyond the understanding of most Arabs of the time.

Even Hassan b Thabet is an unlikely candidate becuase even though he was a poet his poems are not of the caliber of the pre-Islamic gems.

One final point: Poetry was the dominant art form of the Arab society, most Arabs were poets, but mohammad was not although he enjoyed it and had a deep appreciation of it. To anyone with a solid command of Arabic, what we know is that Muhammad's sayings is well-phrased but not remarkable in any way, the Koran, however pushed the envelope in terms of language for a culture where (albalagha) eloquence was revered.

Re: Nautikos, I started reading "The Bible and the Koran" series to Max
thanks for the praise, muser. I haven't really thought of getting any of this published, at least not seriously, mainly because it would require a lot of additional work, and I ain't quite ready for that...

Nautikos, I started reading "The Bible and the Koran" series to Max
Yesterday.  We are both so impressed with these articles. Have you submitted any of your writing for publication? I am beginning to think you are a professional writer, or maybe a college professor...I see in your writing that you give 100% of yourself in whatever you to do! I hope you will be here a long time...

I am really glad to see that you and Corbin have "met".

Im sure frustration and resentment played a role. So did a need to 'buy' his followers' loyalty with gold, especially that taken from Jews...

Naut....

Perhaps the banditry grew from frustration and resentment???  He had a real hard time getting his melding of Judeo and Christian writings to catch on.........

At first, Muhammad was only successful with friends and family.  After thirteen years, “the street preacher” could boast only about 70 determined followers, called Muslims.

Relations with the Meccans turned particularly sour after an episode known as "the Satanic Verses," in which Muhammad agreed to recognize the local gods in addition to Allah.  This delighted the Meccans, who generously extended their welcome.  But Muhammad soon changed his mind after seeing his own people begin to lose faith in him.  He claimed that Satan had spoken through him, and he rescinded recognition of the Meccan gods.

The locals intensified their mockery of Muslims and made life difficult for them.  Although Muslims today often use the word "persecution" to describe this ordeal (justifiably, in some cases), it is important to note that no Meccan ever killed a Muslim during this period.

He turned to forcing his religion on people........and it was much more "profit"-able to raid others possessions...it helped fund his movement.......kind of an early version of our TV evangelists

I hate to butt in on the private conversation of Nautikos and FoliageGold, but I don't know how else to comment on this.   Now that I think of it, I really can't think of anything to say except that there were bandits in the heritage of us all, me thinks.
