I think you're right - we're simply hearing our own pulse when we put the shell to our ear. But isn't that cool that our pulse can sound like the ocean?

That's funny.
Could have been worse, though. At least there wasn't a hermit crab living in the shell.
Btw, I've never been able to hear the ocean, either. Quite frankly, I think it's all just a big scam.
Today, I accidentally stepped on a snail
on the sidewalk in front of our house.
And I thought, I too am like that snail.
I build a defensive wall around myself, a 'shell' if you will.
But my shell isn't made out of a hard, protective substance.
Mine is made out of tin foil and paper bags.

You could make wind chimes out of all those shells. They make an enticing sound that way (if you have wind to go along with them).
