Exactly, because it results in a refreshing demeanor towards others.

There has always been so much of that kind of attitude that it really, really makes one appreciate those that have no need to act that way.

Re:
That's what I've been wondering too. Smugness could be the word I was looking for to define it, but then, maybe I'm smug because I pretend that all artists/writers/teachers etc are talentless because they're not kind to me, nor to anybody. Who am I to say that, anyway?

Re: Matie - Glad to hear your cat is better. Worrisome when they're ill.
I took him today to the vet for revision and he discovered an abcess on his leg too! But gladly he's getting better with antibiotics.

It's definitely preferable when they're that way. You atract more bees with honey than with vinegar.

Re: My high school art teacher was like that...
I had a literature professor that treated me well but openly despised my friends as if they were some sort of garbage, it was crazy!

Personally, I've never found pretentiousness to be all that terrible a trait, actually.
"Smugness", however, can be pretty hard to stomach.
Sometimes I think the so-called experts actually are experts.

My high school art teacher was like that...
a complete snob and stuck up bastard unless he thought you were a talented writer or artist. We got along great, but in the end I couldn't staand his attitude towards my friends. As a general rule, it doesn;t matter how talented someone is, if they're a stuck up snob I usually cannot tolerate them.

When someone, regardless who it is, reacts to another's abilities or ideas,
it all begins to smack of condescension, a 'trait' which I personally abhor with a deepest passion...I let it bother me for years before finally teaching myself to override such ridiculous expression...just as some will treat your finer appearance with a particular twist of attitude, there are worlds of others who will afford you honest, Heartfelt regard toward your efforts. It is from the gestures of the latter that I glean what drives me on with a sense of accomplishment and inner pride/respect...great post!

no matter what your talent there is no need to be snobby-- no one is better than another after all weren't we all created equal-- some just have not discovered their talent yet.
