Great post, Matie. Can't wait to read the rest of it. But I don't know
that we've seen the last of the great dictators, just a shift in the way they do business. Tyranny and despotism can be democratically elected and sanctioned. Look at the authoritarian strides made by the Bush and Blair administrations in the name of national security for their respective countries. What utter crap. They'll spy on our conversations (which they've been doing for years and would have continued doing, despite Congressional oversight and allowance)and suspend habeas corpus to catch a terrorist but they increase border, airport, and port security by a handful of personnel? As for recent dictators, look at Pol Pot, Ahmadinejad, and Chavez. Hitler was elected as well. Tyrants and despots rule by the will the people who think they're being protected and feel they need direction in matters they feel they cannot control. Such is the triumph of the wills.

That's the reason certain people can be so overrated today. You and lustorlove summed it up pretty well.

Humans have always needed some higher power than themselves to give their
lives meaning. Thats why gods and goddesses were worshipped in ancient times. Today we worship celebrities, beautiful people and corrupt leaders because they give us a glimpse of greatness ,power or whatever. I mean look at Marilynn Monroe. She was a mediocre actress,a drunk, adulterous woman who took drugs and aborted her unborn babies. Yet people still worship her as some icon of what an admirable woman is. go figure.
