Nautikos, you've given a very logical explanation in your
post to articulate the origins of religion. Your comment about man's need to explain his existence, hence leading to myths (or something along that line -- you were much more articulate than I) makes perfect sense. Some Christians would say that we each have a God-sized void in our lives that we are going to fill in some way with something in an attempt to meet the need. Whether we fill it with God, some other religion, or other gods (possessions, relationships, work, etc) is up to us. Of course I acknowledge that is a very "Christian" way of trying to explain the "need" for religion!
Fact is, short of acknowledging the marvel of creation (and my doubt that anything such as what we behold on a daily basis could emerge from primordial evolutionary goo), there is no real proof that God exists! It certainly is all about faith, eh?
You know, Naut, you are one reason I could not stay away from blogit. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Not to mention what a gentleman you are!

I'm a bit slow myself in responding, lol! Anyway, your question is very interesting! It can be
partly explained by the persistence of oral traditions over long periods of time, even after migrations had taken place. Pre-literate cultures had better 'memories', as it were...

Naut...
Sorry for being slow to respond......I want to be careful how I respond because i don't want to tread on future segments.... so i will first ask a question.....
Are you going to be touching on the mystery of how civilizations that developed on continents thousands of miles apart have very similar beliefs?

Thanks! So you have caught the 'current', have you? LOL. The reason I put it in there is that I am always open to revise my thinking, though I don't know what it would take for me to become a 'theist' in the conventional sense...

I am really looking forward to what you will share with us on this subject. Myths.. Dream Time.. sigh.. what could be better than the mysterious. I wonder, why are people are so intent on being staunchly atheist or theist now days. After the last few months I have opened my eyes to many things that never would have occurred to me before. The theist in me is delighted that you will be delving into what you "currently"

believe. ~Peace, OTA

I have been influenced by many people, in ways that I can't always tell. Joseph Campbell's work is immensely rich and interesting (I don't know if you realize that Nietzsche was one of
his influences), though I don't know it well enough at all. But I don't see why being a 'fan' of Campbell's (and I certainly wouldn't call myself that) could be seen as a flaw on my part...

Well, I in turn am blown away by
your comment! It is gratifying if one's modest efforts find a resonance, especially from people one admires, and the more so when those people unexpectedly re-appear out of the fog of absence...

Interesting, as always......
I have read quite a lot of your blogs, off and on.....as time permits.....and have printed many of them to read when I can really concentrate....a rare thing these days. This, as usual, is so very well written and I can see you have thought long and hard about what to say...and, I don't disagree with any of it. Personally, I quit trying to figure out exactly what I believe a long time ago. I think religion, per se, might be very much as you describe....and is fascinating in the way that the history and literature of the world is all interesting. I look forward to your "tour"....
Maybe the one area where I might differ....is, that I do believe there is a God....an intelligent designer, if I may be allowed to use those words without being tied to the specific current usage/discussion. I believe that simply because of all the things that are wonderful and beautiful and have no reason I can learn to be that way. I think people have to work as hard to find some other explanation for all the beauty and wonder of the world and of life as they do at accepting a higher being. I don't know it, and don't really worry about it....it's a personal thing that either fits or doesn't. For me, there is a knowing in my soul.....and that is the best I can do at explaining my position.
I only recently....when you mentioned it on Corbin's blog.....learned of your blog about me. Now, that was so humbling I cannot tell you. I will just say "thank you" and hope that you know me well enough from visiting my cabin to know how touched, honored and blown away I was...and still am.
I have a lazy intellect.....especially these days....so, thank you for being exactly the opposite.....willing to do the research, take the time to think through....and to share so that people like me have a source to draw from when we want to figure things out for ourselves....I think you are like a reference library with heart. People like you are what I miss most about Blogit. If only I didn't have to sleep! Sweet dreams, and I'll visit you again when I can.....I think of you as a friend and apologize for waiting so long to tell you.
