We learn manipulation from birth to get what we need and from that point
forward manipulation is taught by response. I believe a salesman is developed from learned response, to role model. The negative connotation of deceitful manipulation is learned by conscience taught, or otherwise negative consequences. Learned manipulation doesn't discriminate by age. I believe judgement, if any, for deceitful manipulation should be based upon numbers; how many deceitful manipulations does it take before the conscience learns or negative consequences are suffered? The negative connotation of deceitful manipulation can be easily justified until learned. No one is without fault in one form or another. You were obviously taught conscience and learned from it, better in youth than jail-age! Just my two cents worth.

I learned a long time ago that although a customer might not like what I have to say, they will appreciate it becuase it is the truth. Much easier that way!

Unfortunately, there are too many that are that way. It is a cutthroat business.

Good post...
I'm also in sales--I'm a business development rep (fancy name for sales support and lead generation) for a technology company. It does require a certain gift to pursuade people into giving your product a try--and it all stems from them liking you. Glad to see that you have a strong sense of morality to deal honestly with people!

I'm occasionally the victim of a good piece of selling and a poor product.
You either want something or you don't. Interesting piece. I once worked in sales myself. Most people there, though not all, were pretty unscrupulous and desperate.

Oh, that's not so bad ...
A couple years ago, I briefly held a summer job working the cosmetics counter at Strawbridge's (not to brag, but I was a three-time salesgirl of the week). At any rate, one time, there was this old woman who walked right past me without even acknowledging my free samples! So when she came back by the counter, I took a bottle of ...
Actually, you know what? It's probably best I don't tell this story.
I hope that after I die, people will say of me:
"That girl sure owed me a lot of money."
