don't despair - even the bard had to get started somewhere, and had to write what the punters would sponsor.

Gr8 topic Tony! Make revolutions for ourselves:Shaw&Wilde&Austen&Pound did
by self-publishing. Sometimes u break through their ceilings; sometimes after we die. I still believe we write for ourselves--joy, fulfilment, relaising all our closeted spaces --and that is well worth it. You have to write FIRST for yourself; and enjoy it. Otherwise the audience -- now or then-- will not catch the fire, the enthused light of what moved us to write. Paz, AntonioninioninionoNoYes!

Moon does rhyme with june and spoon and loon and soon, so what its great.
i have never read anything about writing in my whole life cos if i did i would surely stop what i need to express. so put down that paper and just let go. what you write is you coming through, its perfect as it is.

very true. More often than not, we write what readers want to read and not write what we want readers to read. It happens all the time in the media... how sad!

Thanks everyone!!
Here's another example of why going with an established publisher is not all it's cracked up to be: you'd also have to market it how they insist, as well as edit it to their satisfaction. With self-publishing, you can market it how you want - even not at all if you choose! Most self-publishing companies do include some marketing anyway. And tastes have gone a bit astray - it's therefore up to writers to do something about it - no-one else will.

Hi Tony! Great---I'm so pleased to see that it's not just me being
either 'finicky'-or 'too judgemental' towards these mags!! They treat the readers like a bunch of kids-and ones who no absolutely nothing! Well written! Chris.

Re: Many thanks you three.
Printing and publishing is a risky field now. There is too much technology that reduces the need for printing. Fewer people read now and their tastes have gone awry!

Antonionioni, Ive given up trying to understand what people look for. it's
soooooooo subjective and based on stupid trends, not honest writing. I remember years ago when sexual abuse of kids was the trendy thing an editor told a writer to add a sexual abuse incident and its fallout to sell the book. When the writer protested that that was irrelevant to subject matter and didnt fall within his experience then the editor basically said,'not interested.' So a big part of the time it's not about talented writing. Its about falling into line, not bucking the trends. Its like in the movies, actors often compromise their no nude scenes rule just to get work. They basically prostitue themselves to get somewhere. Writers of integrity dont do this. Your poetry is so good and I could see even schoolkids fascinated by the freshness,by the quirky comments on life as it is. Kids would identify more easily with subject matter and your style of writing than say the Bard with his thees and thous. ...One day....

Dave, good advice - I will be approaching some more publishers shortly and then if nothing happens I could try self-publishing. Publishers cannot predict what will be successful so they ten to play safe. Understandable - perhaps we should try going into publishing to see what it is like!

If it comes to choosing whether to write for myself or for someone else, I always write for myself. But, that's probably not what a writer should do if he/she wants to be published. LOL

FYS likes your name. When I look at the end of the name, all I see is 'onions'. lol. Really good writing is not mechanically done. It flows from within. A good editor will help you clean it up and make it presentable, without changing the essence. Maybe you need to get an editor rather than change your style. Or, read something on HOW TO EDIT! Publishers keep a tight rein on what the public reads. Try alternative or underground publishers. Do a google search! Many books I have read are by the smaller, less well-known publishers. In the beginning I submitted to the mainstream publishers. No-one accepted. My material is better now that I have grown a little. I will submit but to smaller publishers! Best wishes!

Antonionioni:
First off, I love typing your name. onionionionionioinionioni....too fun! ha but I digress.
One thing I notice about your work is that you use the frame of a sonnet but keep your work so conversational. It's very difficult to do. Folks are really finicky about the kind of poetry they like to read; when they are in a position on a publication it can be very disheartening to a poet that is trying to catch a break. Keep writing, you have a great style. I know because I am finicky. Keep submitting your work.

I try to take those "writing tips" with a grain of salt. I've been told "read the classics, develop more structure, etc., etc." but I stick with what comes from my heart, my thoughts, and my beliefs. Maybe it's not
consumer friendly but I figure there must be some people out there who will appreciate it.
