- Go to Jena Six: American Law At It's Finest...(what a load)
Points well taken Cynthia and Benzinha.
I just am very prejudiced against rabble rousers, and against people trying to coerce the courts through mob tactics..
Rabble-rousers make history, though, and history favors the victors.
I think it is more a function of money versus race in many cases. But when poor white people become "ususal suspects", n lone screams about it and leads a mob into a small town to protest.
Nationalize medical care AND legal representation!

Maj, having personal experience with ethnic inequities, I say shout about
it, if you will.
And no one in America is getting much stirred up about much anymore, so I say , "Stir it up, too". The NAACP was about to fold its hand and get up from the table of life.
However, too bad that it has to be the glossy guys doing the stirring and not a regular community or state leader from thereabouts. And, the Mexicanos are getting even worse treatment inside this nation and no one says diddley about that. Allah forbid that you are a Muslim, because, once they grab your arm, you will find no justice in America.
But, I am outraged by so much, that I want to see unrest somewhere, tho' it would be nice if it formed itself behind a candidate with good words in his / her mouth, instead. Then we could vote change, rather than demanding it court case by court case and incident by little incident.
The big Jena Push might turn things around and that might not just be the best thing, nor the just thing, but it does seem to be better to be a dorky white boy thereabouts than any other kind.
I say, verbally beat up the school leaders, beat up the community leaders, beat up those parents who let it go this far, both colors of parents. Grown ups are in charge, but somedays, you'd never know it.
Pre-emptive leadership, not post traumatic leadership.

Re: Witch WriterI sort of disagree with your statement,
Maj, we are of the same generation. I disagree with you about the role that civil disobedience plays in a civil society. There are times when people must take to the streets to speak "truth to power". Take a look at what is happening in Burma (Myanmar) today. All those orange robed Monks, taking to the streets. That is a GOOD thing.

Witch WriterI sort of disagree with your statement,
But I think we think similarly.
No justification for a riot, and no justification to beat people sensless or worse.
No justification for racist anything. The kids were a product of their environment, which at that age includes peers dedicated to needling the status quo and anyone they feel won't nail them, but they must feel consequences. As should their parents, and the school that let things get this far.
The point is, however, that stirring up and importing a large quiet mob is not the way to run a law system. If so, the side with the most guns eventually wins, until the next "payback" or "even-up" ococures.
Gang warfare. Vendetta. Feud. Jihad.

Right on!!!
I think it was wrong for the black kids to beat on a white student. I agree that they should be charged on that. But I also thought that the white students involved in not letting black students under the tree and hanging nooses from that same tree should also be charged for their part in this. Had the white kids not started it, the black kids might not have beaten up on another student. There can't separate rules between the races. It just makes things impossible for everyone.
