Re: Whether or not we are at the end of the world, which I believe we are, I
Thanks for reading, Ariala. I've read many a document discussing the "end times" philosophy from a variety of sources. The single thread running through all of them is that those living the gospel as intended have no fear.
"Then you may securely go your way; your foot will never stumble; When you lie down, you need not be afraid, when you rest, your sleep will be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden terror, of the ruin of the wicked when it comes; For the LORD will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from the snare." Proverbs 3:23-26
The work of the Lord is simple: Love Him, Love one another.

Whether or not we are at the end of the world, which I believe we are, I
think the difference it makes in one's life is the urgency to finish the work God called us to do...and that is based on love for God and love for others...good post!

Hi TAPS, thanks for reading. She must be doing something right, because she already gets letter after letter thanking her for being a good lawyer to them and not letting them rot. While we are often tempted to try to evangelize by preaching to people, it's always better to
show them Christ through our actions, which is what she does by serving even what many call the scum of the earth.

This,
"...she does not hand them a Bible and tell them that Christ is the way to their freedom..." doesn't sound to me like such a bad thing to do. One day one of them might thank her for it.

We should be focused on living the best life possible
every moment. The cynic in me says, "It pays to hedge your bets," just in case there is a virtue based afterlife. The realist in me says, "Live each day the best you know how, live your life fully, make this world a better place, because you're gonna be dead a damned long time."

Re: Fear is the quickest...
Saul, thank you for your insightful comments! I think we can all learn that our attitudes toward others is the biggest problem we face in all areas of society, particularly in churches.
"And does there have to be a higher power involved? I think not. I beleive that one can act ethically without divine inspiration or motivation or guidance. I believe it can work both ways..."
I absolutely agree with you on this. Faith and moral behavior are definitely not linked like many believers seem to think. Your comment is a good illustration of this point---members of a church having no compassion for the downtrodden to the extent that they deride a person who does. This clearly illustrates that faith and behavior are not linked (it's the opposite end of the spectrum, but you get the idea). Compassion is not the property of the "faithful".

Fear is the quickest, surest way to get the attention of the ingnorant
and the learned, FYS. It is a basic common denominator. It is a suppressor and a motivator. Con artists like politicians and clerics use it to great effect.
I like the story about the defense attorney. And the point is well made. I think it important that it is noted that she was being judged by the members of her own church, so just think how society and members of other churches and faiths might view her work.
And does there have to be a higher power involved? I think not. I beleive that one can act ethically without divine inspiration or motivation or guidance. I believe it can work both ways...

Our conquest of our fears about everything is for me the reason we live, not caring when it will all end, that's up to a higher power to decide.......

Pat B, I can't agree with you more! The thing that bothers me the most about these preachers is the part about the tithes....are these preachers doing anything to further the kingdom of God with the money they collect? Or are they just resting easy in their cushy palaces built from the collection plate? I tend to think the latter, as the world doesn't seem to be getting it.

Fear-based psychology, "the end is near" has been a
stock item of evangelists for as long as I can remember. I went to a huge revival once when I was 20 -- so it's been 50 years ago to hear a great prophesying preacher. It was the usual "wars and rumors of wars, drought, famine and pestilence as signs and warnings" join the flock now and pay your tithes before it's too late. Such dramatic presentations can make your heart race when you want to believe and behave. But I've come to think it's shameful for these hucksters to use what amounts to terrorism to spread "the good news."
