Whacky
It was one of those 'file this away' moments, Whacky.  I'm glad you enjoyed it.

What a wonderful post, Johnmacnab
It made me feel good all over.   I feel as if I am still watching your embers glow.

Darn it - I forgot to mention the smell of the smoke.  The sounds here are different.  As the lakers ply the St. Lawrence, you can feel the thud of their engines from miles away.   The other day I was speaking to a guy who lives a few houses away from a crossing.  He was the person who told me about the 2 long, 1 short, 1 long, but he also mentioned that at 4 in the morning, the loco drivers slow down as they go through his village, and they don't blow their horns.  Isn't that nice?

Ooooh, I enjoyed this. I could almost smell the woodsmoke and
feel the breeze. Especially love the distant train whistles -- we don't hear them in Quiettown any longer -- they've torn up all the rails and converted some 40 miles of right-of-way to bike and hiking trails, which is also a good thing.
