I think the research these people did was interesting, but their conclusions leave something to be desired. I ain't gonna go into it here, but for one thing the result does definitely
not say
anything about the 'general intelligence hypothesis', and you can quote me on that...

Re: Of course the two year olds who are monkeying their folks
Pat, I forget who it was, possibly Siggi Freud himself, who said 'If a child had the power, it would swallow the world.' Our culture has adorned children with this image of cutesy-wootsy innocence, and of course their self-centredness is totally innocent, but at least some of us know that in reality they're little savages...
And it is a hypothesis of mine that many of the problems we have with today's teenagers is at least in part the result of parents' refusal to let go of that image in good time, and indulge their little savages way beyond their shelf-life...

Hi .. This was a interesting read and I noted that in the last paragraph you didn't monkey around with the truth.

I definitely remember that--what you said in the last paragraph. No, I don't really remember when I was two, but I sure do remember my sons two's--four different times.

Very interesting stuff......from observing my 2yo gr-dtr, I'd say obviously their subjects weren't going after morsels in tubes held by siblings....or there would have been biting, scratching and pummeling galore! (I find myself telling them to quit acting like a bunch of monkeys quite frequently.....hmmmmm)

Of course the two year olds who are monkeying their folks
have the advantage over lab animals and their handlers. The parents have love, hopes and dreams invested in their offspring. Plus, we operate under the umbrella of a complicated mythology that includes the notion that little kids are helpless, innocent and malleable. In fact, unless there's some disfunction, they're skilled manipulators, selfish and aggressive from the git-go and quite capable of gaining our attention and cooperation by using those baby blues, darling smiles and cute antics to endear themselves. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I could have saved the study supporters a lot of money. A child finds a way to get anything it wants. When stopped you can bet he chose several avenues before he gave up. You are right they were childless, certainly not grandparents. Good post.
