I think you're correct in saying that "Without a fundamental shift in popular opinion, the opposition from Muslim clerics will be too well supported to countenance the recognition of the state of Israel." Especially since this would not just have to be a shift in 'popular opinion' a la Western democracy, but a shift in religious convictions and orientation, in other words, a fundamental cultural shift. That is not going to be achieved by invoking somewhat mystical notions of 'God is Love.' In fact, in my view it isn't going to be achieved at all. But if such shift is impossible, we're stuck!
That is why, in spite of the high possibility of failure, my pragmatic solution ought to be tried. Yes, Muslim clerics would agitate, and it would necessarily involve a certain amount of force and repression, but so be it. But it might also give moderate Muslims an excuse and even an impetus to be more active in resisting Islamo-fascism, which certainly hasn't been the case...

Response to the "appeal to pragmatism
Good post! IMO, the entire tragedy has taken on the airs of a theatrical prouction, with its own peculiar set of "glamorized" rock stars playing to the world -- and a plethora of groupies hanging onto their very violent words, no longer thinking for themselves or the consequences of their actions. They have succumbed to the addiction of violence and its rush, and lost the "pragmatism" so badly needed. Pirty. joab
