corbin -- speaking of illegals
I have known the children of illegals -- who came over here in the 40's and 50's - the illegals started businesses and became contributing members of society and their children are now assimilated into society and their grand and great grand children.

one of my most frequent acquaintances (and a very good friend) was the son of one -- Kooka and I went over to his home numerous times for games and dungeons and dragons and other things.

point is, illegals have been part of the American scene for as long as there has been a border.  and they have contributed to our society equally with legal citizens.

no doubt these contemporary illegals are making contributions.  they are taking jobs that none of us would want, remember, and quite quietly -- mainly because they are illegals.

and by the way, if you or anyone else is so adamant for discouraging illegals, I would suggest that you don't buy oranges or lettuce -- chances are those are picked by illegals.  -- and possibly other plants, -- could be they have a hand in the processing of cotton -- so maybe watch who makes your jeans.

You're right, kooka. I would hope that the great majority of conservatives

in this country do not hold with this polemic, leaning more towards the middle.  But I fear that your assertions are more correct than not.  Perspective is everything.  Watch FoxNews and see what other trumped up "War on __________" to solidify the fearmongering base.  It's really sad...

And happy holidays, my friend...

Re: Re: Amen Kooka!

They are only slipping through the back door because we won't let them in. Remember, when we first came here, we took away somebody else's right to be here. How can we complain and call ourselves children of God. God wants us to live together and treat each other accordingly.

I never said conservatives are racist. I'm the last one in the world to call somebody racist. I said a TV commentator espouse those views, not me. Don't you think my being Black takes me out of the racist arena? That's not even a word in my dictionary.

You didn't read my statement evidently or you wouldn't be accusing me of saying negative things. I think we can control the immigration process if we set some rules and allow a certain portion in at a time. We can set up working priorities that would allow us to know who is in our country and for how long. Right now, we don't have anything.

The plan I have would at least have immigrants paying taxes, paying into social security, paying into a medical plan to cover the family, and working for a limited number of years (like 2-3) and they would have to go back and reappy for a second term which would make them qualified to become citizens with a fee.

That way we could get a lot of our money back that we've spent on aliens and recompensate our social security system, and they would have fingerprinted immigrant IDs that will follow them throughout the system. At least this would be organized and when we find immigrants without IDs, we should immediately send them back along with all criminal immigrants.

To me, that's at least a plan. Right now we have nothing at all and are giving away our services FREE OF CHARGE. That is what is ridiculous to me. You should pay for what you get. That's the whole nine yards!

I can't help but wonder if you understand what diversity is.  Allowing for diversity does not mean we have a bunch of different languages and I have never made the claim that we need such. We do need one basic language that we all use as the common speech of the country.  Of course we still do not speak true English and the language Americans will speak in a hundred years will not be the same as what we speak now, no matter what happens. Active languages change as time goes on.

As for the culture part, we already have many, many different cultures in this country.  In truth there is not one 'American' culture out there.  We are already a country of diversity and that is part of our strength.

The Great Fight Against Diversity In America
Kooka_Lives: Any nation will destroy itself internally if a common culture or language isn't accepted by a majority of its citizens.  I don't want this country to be like Bosnia during the 1990s.

Corbin
I think the Conservative are over reacting to it all, which is no surprise to me.  You are a group of very paranoid people. looking for things to be upset over.

I've never said it should not be controlled, just that illegals are not the great problem that you and many others claim them to be.  You true issue with them is that you and many others have racial issue, which becomes very clear when one looks at what it is you keep on falling back to.  You go and stereotype them like mad and talking about how we are going to loose our language and our culture and so on.

The illegals are NOT here just for free money and health care.  They want a chance at a better life and are more than willing to work for it in most cases if given the chance.  Of course we also could stop worrying about the Middle East and this very idiotic waste of money Bush ahs dubbed the 'War on Terror', and start trying to help our neighbor build a better economy, but we haven't bombed them and they are mostly Christians, so you conservatives don't feel guilty and don't feel that you need to try to convert them.

Of course you, the great and wise Conservative, would never make any stereotypical comments about liberals.

Re: Amen Kooka!
So you think there should be open borders and unlimited immigration?  No one was slipping through Ellis Island during the dead of night......

Now we slip back to the typical stereotypes,  conservatives are racist......what's next?  Are you going to step it up and also call us Fascists, too.

I feel like I am talking to the walls.....name one country that has open borders?  The immigration process has to be controlled to prevent overwhelming the systems in the country.  Hospitals, schools are being filled way before their planned dates of capacity....why?   Because the Mexican government is freeing itself of its responsibility to provide some small semblance of hope to its people....out of sight, out of mind.

Amen Kooka!

I have a blog I posted elsewhere saying almost the same thing. We used to be a country with open arms, welcoming anyone in to seek freedom to work, practice their religion, get a decent education and all the things that migrants are looking for because they felt America meant "freedom." And we were letting all in through the front door, so to speak, of Ellis Island, with the welcoming arms of the Statue of Liberty.

Now, the poor Mexicans have to slip through the back door because we won't allow them in like we did migrants from all over the world. I believe the conservatives are more afraid of their country becoming a beautiful shade of brown through integration than anything else. I heard one commentator (not going to mention his name) actually espouse that fear and I was shocked. These people believe their race is about to be extinguished and they are fighting hard to keep it from getting to that point. One commentator even suggested that Americans (true ones) should have more babies (unmixed) I assume.

Fear of any kind, for whatever reason, will always hold us back as a nation. The melting pot is melting itself it seems.

As a naturalized American, and a proud one, I'm all for diversity..However,

I must say that I'm saddened by some of the extreme overgeneralizations made here by both writers..while their passion for their respective viewpoints is unmistakable, the truth, as in most cases, lies somewhere in between..perhaps some of what I had to say in my poems on Equality, War could further facilitate a healthy dialogue here on this important topic, blessings - Ash Pradhan

Corbin
Thank you for proving my point.

Look at your comment there.  You only showed that you really do follow what I said in this post.

You start off by trying to justify your stance on it all and yet provide no proof of what you say.

How many illegal or even legal immigrants have you personally known?  I've known many of both myself.  We have a very large Mexican population here in Colorado. from the illeagal I have known I have seen nothing but those who want to work hard and be part of this country.  Yes, they do try to take care of their families who are still in Mexico, what is wrong with that?  Some are unable to learn the language, as are some who are here legally.  It actually causes them to be limited in what they can do and most of them known this.

And then you finish up with the 'free health care' judgment.  I can not help but wonder how many people born here in the USA who are truly lazy bums and do not want to work so they just do not go to work and live off the system.  We have lots and lots of white trash out there who are much worse than the illegal immigrants.  They do not do any work and so do not pay taxes, but instead go and have batches of kids so that they can live off of welfare.  But in your mind because they were born in this country they should be viewed differently than those who were not born her and would like to actually be more productive in our economy.

You've not done a thing to prove the idea of this post wrong.  In fact you commented on the smallest part of the post and really ended up showing yourself to be exactly what I was talking about in the post.

Two things.....
First.......key phrase:  "the great melting pot"......the problem we have is that the illegals coming in aren't interested in being melted.....blended in....assimilated..... into American society.  They do not think of themselves as American.....they send their money to extended families at home.....refuse to learn the language and refuse to be a part of our country.

Second, as a typical Liberal, you lump illegal and legal immigrants into the same group, they're not.  We have over 1 million legal immigrants coming in here a year....How many does Mexico allow in?  We welcome them because  THEY WANT TO BECOME AMERICANS!

The 11-20 million illegals here aren't interested in citizenship.....only dineros, and free health care.
