It was a sensor I had to replace, but it was much less expensive to replace than the starter. I know this, because six months ago, I had to replace the starter!

What's more embarrassing than running out of gas close to home
is coming back to your car with a full load of groceries and the car mysteriously won't start. So you go to the service station next door and ask for an expert opinion. The "expert" tries to start the car to no avail. Expert says: "Must be the solenoid." So you walk three blocks home. (Yes, I know. This happened before cell phones when gas cost 18 cents a gallon, and now I would use the fold-up shopping cart for the same trip.) So your SO walks back to rescue the car and is home in about 10 minutes. He says: "Don't ever again try to start the car in park."
