Maybe the holes are like a calendar - counting off the length of time it took to carve and create such a masterpiece. They're definitely curious markings.

Thank you for showing us things we may never see in person.
I suspected as much about camels. As for the parallel rows of holes -- I'm wondering if they didn't serve as anchors for some sort of ladder used by the workmen -- maybe a board was laid across the face of the building on a couple poles extended out from the holes so the artisans could use it as a platform to do their carving. It's an amazing sight. :)

I have a different view on the matter Azur
Blogit is a fantastic place to get some general info in a hurry. I believe in doing a thorough job and my frustration regrding Petra stems more from my inability to learn more about it while I was there as much as it about not being able to answer even the simplest of your qeuries. Thank you for trying to make me feel beter about the whole thing. Happy 2008

First of all, you have nothing to make amends for here
I have been reading your posts and enjoying them, although like you my time for commenting is limited. I always meant to go to Jordan. I have visited sites a bit like this in Turkey.
