Saw this one last week--
It is one of the best I've seen of this kind of sci-fi/speculative/horror genre that I have ever seen. I agree that it is up there with ALIEN for suspense and intensity! I have not read the book, or seen the previous versions of the movie.
Will Smith deserves some awards for this one.
