I think your read is pretty much on the money, Naut, especially on the
McCain angle. And I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that R.L. was a secret supporter of McCain, that he said all that crap just for ratings, and he secretly hopes Hillary wins so he can build his ratings back to where they used to be...

As you may have gathered, my comments on the American political scene are few. But let me try and make an attempt at a serious, rather than facetious answer.
If I were a conservative American (and I would certainly not be a 'liberal' one, unless we qualify 'liberal' by 'Jeffersonian'), I would not want the Dems to win the election. I simply cannot stand Hillary (I couldn't even if I were a Dem), and while Obama has a certain appeal, I think he's shallow and, more importantly, I don't like many of the people riding on his coattails.
Looking at the Republicans, I'm not overly impressed with any of them, for various reasons. In McCain's case, because he's not a conservative. BUT, and here's the important point, I think that, in the end, he's the only one who can beat either Hillary or Obama in the election. I may be reading it wrongly, but my take on the American political scene is that a real conservative can't win. However, first McCain has to win the nomination! Which may not happen if conservatives don't support him! That's where support from R.L. would have helped, as would support from other real conservatives.
But maybe R. L. is looking forward to years of sniping at Hillary or Barack, or Heaven help us, the Dems' 'dream ticket'...
