Whacky my parents always told me that too! We were never allowed to watch TV without lights but when I got older I did it and it gave me a headache...Happy Valentines Day to you and Bo the wonder dog!

Watching any FLAT screen without 3D existence will spoil your eyes. Lights help by lightening the impact of the light from the TV and by giving you a lighted area you can re-focus on!! My take on this!!!

Whacky,
I think the "don't sit so close to the tv" and the "don't watch in the dark" are old wives' tales. However, watching in the dark always kinda gave me a headache, so go figure.  By the way, don't run with scissors.

I don't know why it should be bad for your eyes, but of course everybody knows that TVs are afraid of the dark, and often refuse to work if you turn out the lights..., and a pat for =^..^=

Well I'll be darned. I never thought that watching television in the dark has contributed to my near blind state? I ALWAYS watch television in the dark...for this is when I am winding down the day and hoping to nod off

This is the first time that I ever heard anyone make that comment. I watch TV in the dark most of the time because I don't like all the extra glare from lamps and such. I don't know if this hurts your eyes because mine were weak before TV.
