The mention of "rough hands" always brings loving memories of my dear Mother who worked so hard and with so little to keep a house and home for her husband and seven children. I can remember her washing our clothes in the back yard in a tin tub, a washboard and a bar of lye soap--so many dirty clothes, so much work to do. When she would work in the garden, I don't remember any gloves to protect her hands. I never noticed the roughness until the dampness of the night would bring out the croup in us and we would begin the coughing that seemed to remain after our long bout with whooping cough. Mom would rub Vicks Vaporub on my chest with those rough, loving hands and it would feel like she was sandpapering my skin.
