strat, I happen to be very aware of damage squirrels can cause with their gnawing and clawing. I have lived in three different places where they have managed, one way or another, to get into the upper regions of the house by making a hole from the outside and then building a nest. They are very hard to discourage and almost impossible to get rid of. Thankfully, I am not bothered with them here.

This post was a trip, really weird in an interesting sort of way :-). I don't know if i wanted the mental image of a squirrel putting on a condom, but I got it thanks to you loll I think the pill is a much better idea and I got to say that I am proud of those researchers, at least they did not come up with a "Lets shoot a squirrel" day likle they do for deers and bears when their population goes up. Great post , you got me reading it till the end !!! Thank you for sharing it.

I know you've been a groovin' second mom
to many a bushy tail, Young Miss, and I think that's terrific. I, too, think it's a good idea. But I still want to know how someone's gonna teach a squirrel to put on a Trojan...

That's very true, Wyley John!
And very effective, too, I might add. That way, you don't have to wait for one to run under a radial tire...

Uhm, squirrel sex huh???
Geez, and I thought it was common knowledge that squirrels carried their nuts in the cheeks!?

But I don't know that that's got to do with anything other than I just had to say it.

Sir Strat,
I say it's a good idea. Being a squirrel rehabber myself, I care deeply about them. It's much better than THE PELLET GUN, WILEY!!!

This is an outstanding post, humorous and informative. I see you have some mixed comments. It is a good idea. How about some for rats too. I don't know why they didn't send them to public school they can learn all about sex and how to prevent those babies in first grade now. Also good idea for daughters but I beg do the same for your boys.

Too squirrely for words. Me, I'd just use my pellet gun~ but don't tell Kabuiepie that~ 'cuz I did a test here like that and discovered dead squirrels don't reporduce at all I've found.

Actually, in my neighborhood, Hagi,
we have Cooper's Hawks who do a lot of that. They weren't introduced; they just sort of showed up, dazzling urbanites with feathers and talons.
But hey; this is America, and if doctoral candidates can con a public university and the U.S. Government out of several thousand dollars to study the sex lives of tree climbing furry commode brushes, well hey; all I have to say is, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Good to see you/meet you/ all that! Thanks for dropping by and I'll be visiting your blog soon!

Great one!
Well, introducing some natural predators would be cooler. If not hunters, why not falcons? Maybe the ancient sport of hunting with falcons could be reanimated?

They already proposed that, CD. Sort of...
DNR actually proposed bringing in hunters to cull the monstrous population of deer on Hilton Head and other places. A lot of well-meaning dunderheads got all up in arms, figuring slow starvation and death by moving vehicle to be far more humane than a few well-placed bullets.

I wonder if it would have been......
cheaper to just allow a few squirrel hunters to come in and thin out the population.....it would have provided quite a few tasty breakfasts for some South Carolinians......gravy, biscuits and fried squirrel.....with some chilled sliced tomatoes on the side......
(I'm probably gonna catch hell for this, aren't I?)
