Yes Troosha, I imagine it was :) With all the planted bugs in hotel rooms etc..
But we didn't have poverty, actually, as you "rotten capitalists" ;) know it - money was not a problem, the problem was to find something to buy for the money. People were standing in lines for hours in order to buy sausages or, for example, toilet paper (which was a luxury product, normally we'd use old newspapers); and I still remember the excitement, the almost religious experience when I was some 6-7 years old and for the first time in my life I tasted a BANANA! Now that was something. I tried to recall that beautiful taste for months.

I visited Moscow when the USSR was still the USSR and the was a sense of "censorship" in everything we did - where we went, what we were allowed to see (the good only and not a glimpse of people living in poverty), where we ate, etc. It felt very strange...
