Dear vogue, I don't think you have any idea how difficult your language really is; most people can't even speak a word after 6 months here! I met a guide who speaks 5 languages and he told me that even after years in Germany is still had trouble with it! So, unless your a language genius (which I'm not, obviously), forget about the "one" month being fluent!LOL
As for speaking at home, thanks for the suggestion naut. but we already have enough problem with French and English, Australien and Quebcois! LOL But I will try.

Have you thought of trying to speak German at home?
I bet you your son has picked up quite a bit...

I can't comment on the difficulty of German, because I am German, but I like to learn languages as a means to keep the grey cells fit. I tackled Turkish recently and I always find the best method a private teacher for an hour a day, every day, for a month followed by another hour of studying by myself. After a month you should be pretty fluent.
