Yep, still smelt dipping around here.  I asked and am told not quite time yet, a few more weeks and they will be running like crazy.  Guess the salmon haven't caught up here.

Re: Is it smelt season already?

Bel,

We haven,t had a dipping season for smelt since about five or six years after salmon were planted in the great lakes, back in the early seventies. Some smelt now are for sale by the commercial fishermen who use wing type nets that funnel them into holding nets. There aren't any dip netters anymore around here. It used to be a really big deal. Do people still dip them in the UP? About 1975, I heard of some guys who nearly filled a dump-truck bed. Imagine trying to clean that many before they got soft and slimy! I heard that they took them to Detroit where a Jewish man bought the whole bunch to make into gefilte fisk or lox, or whatever they call it. He probably made a killing, if they hadn't spoiled, yet.

Is it smelt season already?

Here in Chippewa County, the snow hasn't quite melted, in fact we had snow earlier this week.

Just remember, when smelt fishing, the fisher is required to bite the head off of that nasty little thing...and one wonders why I don't tag along for this local passtime.

Sounds like our shad runs down here.
The shad isn't that bony, but unless you get them when they're spawning, they're the most oily, nasty creatures on the planet. Nonetheless, I'd rather have baked shad roe than Buluga caviar any day. For one thing, it's easier to spell...
