Smoked herring are red
And smelly. They used to be dragged across a hunt trail in an attempt to confuse dogs.

I made red Herring gravy once...
And it did not taste like chicken, more like sour grapes.  My favorite quote from "Nick Danger, Third Eye" by The Firesign Theater, "there was something fishy about the butler, probably a Pisces working for scale!"
