Re: Re: Re: Halfelven
If they went on a trip up north and she (possible..It is a was after they got home that they signed a birth certificate which back then could have happened) born around there or when they came back...could have talked with the Ojibawa tribe who have "Or" sounding words..Here is a link for you to check out..

Re: Re: Halfelven
It's also possible the family misheard her, I suppose. Cherokee was not spoken in the house. But Cherokee names always end in a vowel or an s and there is no sound like the "or". It's possible the name may have been borrowed from one of the other Indian Nations. Or maybe just a riff on Dad's brother's name, Virgil.
Her own name was Columbia America because she had been born while her family visited Canada, family legend says she was born the day they got off the ferry back in States but records I've found say she was born in Oklahoma.

Re: Halfelven
It is possible that she got it from something that she may have read or mixed two names together(My father did that with me for my middle name..a mixture of both my Grandmothers) or it was the first thing that popped in her head (my grandmother named my mom Rosabel because she saw roses with bells in a small garden while she was dreaming the night before she had her) Did you check the myths and fables there may be something close there...Glad you enjoyed this..Thank you for stopping in.

I like this
My father was named by his Cherokee grandmother. She named him Orgal, which isn't Cherokee and contains sounds that aren't found in Cherokee. Eighty-five years later and still no one knows where she got the name. :)
