Thank you so much for your comment Michaudblaine, she had different ideas of what retirement would be I guess... she miscalculated? I don't know, it is what it is, She was wonderful though. Thanks again.

Dear Ash, You would be surprised how many people of our generation are languishing in loneliness and despair, abandoned by their children and living with sadness and depression, but that aside, this poem was inspired by a dear friend who passed away a few months ago, it is not meant to be a reflection of a generation or a living plan for anyone to follow, nor is it a referendum for or against women choosing to stay home to raise their kids I was not trying to say in it that women have no options but to die alone., my Mom died at 76 and played tennis with me the week before she died ( and she won!) I never intended for anyone to think this is the way it has to be for most women. I apologize if in anyway you or anyone else felt typecaster or offended by it. I wrote it as a tribute to a wonderful woman who I witness to be a great mother and wonderful wife. She was a great, multi-talented, caring and loving person that did the best she could with the circunstances she was given. I feel totally unworthy to pass judgement on her or her way of life and I don't know anyone good enough to do so either. Thank you for your comment :-)

Sinome my friend, though this is an apt description...
of our parents' generation, please allow me to brighten it by saying that women, and men, of our generation have the opportunity to seriously evaluate our values / priorities to be able to live a balanced life till the end..I know a few folks who are well into their seventies, even eighties, who have had a balanced life and are still healthy enough to play active sports, travel, socialize...so all u dear ladies & gents, though this is a beautiful poem, please look at the positive side of life and chart your future course more optimistically, no matter what the past, bless u all :)! - Ash

I do not know where to start with my kudos for this exquisite write. This may be one of those times where wordless is more. I am taken away by this one. I just don't have words. I just don't. But I will say, these are my favorite poems, those that leave me speechless. I need to read this once more. Simply wonderful! sam

BRAVO!!! You have completely captured the very essence of self sacrifice on behalf of so many women in the world - what it is they become - what it is they feel but often can't explain. This is a magnificent piece of writing.

Wow – I think what made this such a compelling read is that many of can see ourselves in this woman. This is outstanding, Sinome. You poured your heart into this one. In that, there is no doubt.

Absolutely beautiful, my friend...as I read, I saw my mother sitting in her corner of the kitchen, reading long into the night while she waited for my father to return home from work...her Dream was to be a journalist but, as in your poem, Life interrupted with children, dogs and a myriad which filled her moments until she, too, found her way to a better place...Truly wonderful writing, Sinome....outstanding.

Hi Marta of the sand-kissed oceans
I have loved every single word, the feelings of gloom, the backyard and the birds providing sustenance to a dark dank soul when needed most, the loss of husband, children being distant busy in their own pursuits, and then suddenly, the tale veering off to the sadness of reminiscings of indulgence almost to the point of bringing wrinkles to this once young beautiful loving lovely lady, ultimately to its denouement, and in it, the denouement not darkening the gloom, but in her realization by the touch of Providence bringing light and in her becoming a star, which she always was, and which she did realize, as we all realize only when its too late, some never do. Excellent! Marvelous!! Phenomenal!!!

Wow, a story of love, trial, and regret....that was so unbelievably beautiful. To read the journey that you took us on through this woman's life was truly amazing and I could feel my heart go out to her as she regretted the moments of excitement that she allowed to pass right by her. But it ended wonderfully with her becoming a star in the night...that was just lovely.
One question: Did you use the word "bye" on purpose? I thought the word made it far more powerful as if the woman's mind was saying her farewells, but I wasn't sure if this surprise was done on purpose or if it happened to be a simple mistake that turned into a wonderful meaning. Either way, I absolutely love this poem!!! Bravo!!

Very long but very unique.
This blank verse poem told of a woman's life of giving. Always giving with very little receiving. A woman who lived through her family and children hoping and wishing to connect. She gave of herself with little in return. What she did not do was p lan for a future in retirement. A retirement to more interesting things and goals and objectives.
